What to Expect!

Check out my latest post:  Student Strategy Sharing

Yay!  ASCD Express published my article in their March 2017 newsletter:  http://www.ascd.org/ascd-express/vol12/1213-cleland.aspx

If you have used the terms at the top of the page in recent searches, this site will provide practical applications, research links, and ideas to nudge your current constructions about these topics and about teaching and learning.

If I can provide additional examples, references, or even a handout I used with my students that might help you, just ask!

Janell, I am envious that you kept a log. How wonderful that you can analyze your reflections to gain clarity of what worked for your students.

Janell, I remember that stack of journals so well. You are giving me pause about recycling all my old ones!

    Janell,
I have also been thinking a lot about the idea of a “language of learning.” I, too, believe that students need strategies- tools- to help them think. Freewrites/ graphic organizers, etc… provide a framework for learners to record ideas. In addition, they need to know there are different ways of knowing-the language of learning. The clarity in the document of how to use connections or questions to deepen thinking is powerful because learners now know what to do differently. Providing that scaffolding along with the “color coding” – making their thinking visible helps learners become more sophisticated thinkers.
